Finding critical support at Family Scholar House

December 18, 2024

In a blue cap and gown, Gloria Mabini recounted her long road to becoming a college graduate. She would not be standing there, waiting to line up for the processional at 檚 Fall 2024 commencement ceremony, if not for the support she found at Family Scholar House and the Student Success Hub.

淚 would not be here today without the Family Scholar House, she said. 淓veryone at goes above and beyond to make sure you have what you need and that you檙e on track.

For a long time, Mabini did not consider going to college. In her early education, she didn檛 get beyond middle school, she said, and spent decades working unskilled jobs.

In 2018, a physical injury was like a wakeup call, and she resolved to get the education she needed for a career that she could be proud of. More importantly, she wanted a career that would make her children proud.

淚檓 excited to be on stage and show them. I want to make them proud and give them an expectation to meet, said the single mother of three, ages 8, 13 and 26.

During her time at , she faced several barriers that didn檛 have anything to do with her abilities in the classroom. For starters, there were the demands of caregiving, especially when she needed to help her father manage some health issues.

She also lacked reliable transportation, and that檚 where Family Scholar House made the greatest impact for her. With the generous support of a community partner, Family Scholar House provided Mabini a donated car, allowing her to get to class and keep pursuing her dream.

淎t Family Scholar House, we are proud to celebrate Gloria檚 success. Today, as a graduate of , Gloria stands as a testament to resilience and determination, said Family Scholar House Regional Coordinator Lynnette Kennedy. 淗er story reminds us of the power of community support in transforming lives. We are honored to have played a part in her journey and look forward to seeing her achieve even greater things in the future.

Mabini, 50, earned an associate in applied science in business administration and is developing plans to start her own business.
